Privacy policy

Last updated October 30, 2026. Penara is made by Lukens Holdings LLC ("we").

The short version

We do not collect your data. Penara has no accounts, no ads and no analytics or tracking. Your notes stay on your device and in your own iCloud.

What stays on your device

• Notebooks, pages, drawings, typed text, photos, audio recordings and imported documents.
• Your handwriting font, covers and settings.

iCloud

If you are signed in to iCloud and leave sync on, Penara stores your notes in your private iCloud database using Apple's CloudKit. Only you can access it. We cannot read it.

Permissions Penara may ask for

• Photos and Camera: to place pictures on pages and scan documents.
• Microphone: to record audio with a note. Recordings stay on your device and in your iCloud.
• Calendar and Reminders: to show your events in the Journal, start notes from events, and create or complete Reminders. This happens on your device through Apple's system. We never receive it.
• Location (while in use): optional. If you turn on "Remember where I wrote a note", Penara stores coordinates with the page so it can open the note nearest to you. It is never sent to us.
• Face ID: to lock the Journal, notebooks or the app. Biometric data stays with Apple.
• Notifications: for an optional daily journal reminder.

On-device features

Handwriting recognition and search use Apple's on-device frameworks. Your writing is not uploaded.

Purchases

Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple. We receive no payment details.

Children

Penara does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Deleting your data

Delete notes in the app, or delete the app. To remove iCloud data, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Storage > Penara.
